The Principality of Andorra, bordered on one side by France and on the other by Spain is a beautiful mountainous country worth visiting for both its scenery and duty-free shopping. Andorra in the winter months is a busy ski centre and in summer you can visit the upper slopes and take in the magnificent views or come across a secluded mountain lake. Andorra is a small state, about 175 square miles (450 square kilometers) or half the size of New York City, located in the east Pyrenees Mountains. It is bordered by France on the north and Spain on the south. Andorra is characterized by narrow valleys and mountain peaks that stretch for heights up to more than 8,850 feet (2,700 meters). Forests of birch and pine cover the mountains, below which are pastureland where sheep graze. The population of Andorra is about 65,000, with 61% of its people being Spanish, 30% Andorran, and 6% French. Native Andorrans are Catalan in ancestry and language. Catalan is the official language of the principality, although French and Castillian are also widely spoken. Most Andorrans are Roman Catholics. The literacy rate of the principality is 99%, and its people enjoy quality health care. Andorra is a safe land with a low crime rate.
