The village of Cherni Osam is perched on the banks of the Cherni Osam river at the foot of the peaks Golyam Kupen and Ambaritza. It is about 12 km east of Troyan and only 2 km away from the Monastery of Troyan where are displayed the splendid and famous murals painted by Zahary Zograf. Eagles can be seen freely roaming the skies above the village. They are the emblem of Cherny Osam and have been immortalized in a monument sited at the end of the village. The village provides a very good starting point for the various tourist trails to the high valley of the Cherny Osam River, The Central Balkan Mountain National Park and the “Steneto” Reserve in particular. In the Reserve, the visitors have the chance to glimpse roaming deer or the wild brown bear. The village is a good starting point for the Ambaritza Hut. The local guides are graduates of the first Bulgarian Mountain Guides School – Cherny Osam. They have a blazed a number of interesting trails on the mountain. Those of you who prefer short-distance hikes can follow the picturesque tracks leading to the 14 surrounding neighborhoods of the village where you will find yourselves in a bye-gone world of houses build over a hundred years ago, low sleep-pens, stone slate roofs, the gentle murmur of springs specious meadows.
It will take 2 to 3 hours walk to climb to the ridge of the Balkan Mountains and from there one can see the whole of the Rose Valley and as far as the Rhodope Mountains to the south and the Danube glittering in the north. The village of Cherny Osam is famous for its Natural Science Museum. It serves as an base for practical natural science lessons for many schoolchildren from all over the country. There is an original ethnographic collection of over 2000 old photographs that relate the 300-year history of the village. Nearby are the two monasteries of Skit St. Nicolas and the Zelenikovski St. John the Forerunner. Troyan and Cherny Osam are connected by a regular bus service.
